Beta-alanine and Creatine Together
Many studies using creatine and beta alanine together demonstrated the additive efficacy of this combination on performance strength. Researchers found that the combination of creatine and beta alanine had significant effects on lean tissue accumulation and body fat composition.
Supplements, such as Phosphagen Elite, are currently popular amongst those involved in weight training who want to gain muscle mass and added strength, and athletes who participate in sports where endurance is especially the main concern. Even individuals who feel their training have reached a standstill and want to achieve more will see a difference. Research on the possible curative benefits of creatine and beta alanine for various neurologic and neuromuscular disorders is also underway.

Beta-alanine, also called 3-aminopropionic acid, is an isomer of the amino acid alanine that occurs free in nature. It is an important component of the vitamin pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), coenzyme A & acyl carrier protein. It is the derivative of carnosine and anserine that can be found in muscles.
As a supplement, beta-alanine is currently being credited for its ability to enhance exercise capability and muscle metabolism mainly by aiding the acid buffering capacity of muscles. As mentioned above, carnosine is derived from beta-alanine. Beta-alanine is the rate-limiting step in carnosine synthesis, meaning, the amount of carnosine in the body is dependent on how much beta-alanine is still available for utilization. Carnosine is a histidine-containing dipeptide that is found in the brain, skin, heart, kidney, liver and skeletal muscle, particularly in type 2 muscle fibers, which are involved in high-intensity workouts.
Various physiologic processes have been attributed to carnosine in skeletal muscles. These include pH buffering, acting as an antioxidant, regulating calcium ion sensitivity and excitation-contraction coupling. During exercise, when we engage in sudden bursts of activity or prolonged intense activity, muscles are forced to continue contracting without sufficient oxygen (anaerobic activity) and end products like H+ (hydrogen ion), primarily from lactic acid buildup, accumulate and cause a decrease in the pH.
The drop in pH decreases muscular performance by compromising muscular ability to contract with enough force and fosters earlier onset of fatigue. Thus, carnosine, along with other intracellular buffers like inorganic phosphate, protein-bound histidine residues, bicarbonate and creatine phosphate, are identified to delay inhibition of the enzymatic and contractile mechanism in muscle that results to enhanced performance.
Various studies have shown that using beta alanine as supplement indeed increases carnosine concentration by as much as 42% to 65% in just 4 weeks. The enhanced muscle levels of carnosine were found to effect increased muscle endurance, increased oxygen uptake ability, and longer time to fatigue.

Creatine is a product of protein metabolism found in muscle. It is synthesized primarily in the liver from three amino acids: glycine, arginine and methionine. It is stored mostly in the skeletal muscles (95%), and the rest in the brain, heart, and testes. The phosphorylated derivative of creatine is called creatine phosphate or phosphocreatine.
The energy for driving most biochemical reactions is derived from the hydrolysis or breakdown of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). To maintain adequate amounts of ATP required for bursts of activity, phosphate is stored as creatine phosphate. The formation of creatine phosphate, which is catalyzed by the enzyme creatine kinase, provides a small but rapidly mobilized reserve of high-energy phosphates that can be used to maintain intracellular level of ATP during the first few minutes of intense muscular contraction. It has been known that creatine phosphate is the compound that is steadily depleted during muscular activity as it donates its phosphate group to ADP (adenosine diphosphate) to form ATP. Therefore, the phosphorylated form of creatine functions as a store of ATP in the muscle.
The amount of creatine phosphate in the body is said to be proportional to muscle mass. Creatine and creatine phosphate are then degraded to creatinine that is excreted in the urine. The amount of creatinine excreted from the body then reflects the total creatine phosphate in the body, which in turn is indicative of how much muscles are in the body. Thus, creatinine in the urine can be used to estimate muscle mass. For example, in cases where there is less muscle mass, such as in paralysis, there will be less creatine phosphate storage and consequently less creatinine in the urine.

Creatine is one of the most well-known and valuable supplements available in the market today. Creatine is normally produced by the body and is carried to the muscles by the bloodstream. Once in the muscles, creatine is transformed into creatine phosphate – a strongly powerful metabolite that is used to reinforce the muscles’ ultimate energy source, the ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate).
Most specialized creatine products these days are comprised of creatine plus ingredients believed to increase creatine uptake by the muscles (i.e. sugars and insulin supporters). While you might realize the effect of creatine sooner by itself, the additional benefits of the added ingredients over straight creatine is minimal after several weeks.
Phosphagen Elite goes beyond enhanced creatine storage. It is an advanced creatine technology that works to support creatine use while in the muscle. Specifically, Phosphagen Elite includes FGC—a proprietary, patented fourth generation creatine technology that may increase strength and energy.
Phosphagen Elite contains Beta Alanine. Beta Alanine helps your body produce Carnosine, which buffers the hydrogen ions in the body. This prevents muscle burn that often ends work outs. Because the Beta Alanine prevents muscle burn, you will be able to work out longer and make the most of each session at the gym.
